Neuroscience Scholarship PhD at UIC Barcelona

Are you passionate about cutting-edge neuroscience research? Do you dream of exploring the mysteries of the brain and pushing the boundaries of science? This is your chance to embark on a high-impact PhD journey at the Synaptic Plasticity Laboratory (Spine Lab), located at the prestigious International University of Catalonia (UIC) in Barcelona. We are inviting applications for a PhD position in neuroscience, focusing on the intricate mechanisms behind learning and memory, brain wave synchronization, and synaptic plasticity. 📚🧠

💥 Apply by October 30th, 2024 to join a dynamic and innovative research team at the intersection of UIC Barcelona and the Institute of Neurosciences, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). This is your opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research on glutamate receptors, synaptic plasticity, and cutting-edge photopharmacology techniques, utilizing lasers, multiphoton microscopy, and light-activated drugs to delve deep into the brain’s functionalities. 🔬✨

🔍 What Will You Be Researching?

Our research is at the forefront of understanding how the brain stores and retrieves information through the modulation of synaptic activity. Here’s a glimpse into the key areas of investigation:

  • Synaptic Plasticity: Exploring the structural changes at the single-spine level and the impact on brain function. Discover how plasticity is essential for learning processes, memory retention, and neural adaptation.
  • Brain Waves: Investigating how brain waves coordinate neural activities and their role in various neurodevelopmental conditions, including the autism spectrum. This research has the potential to unlock new therapeutic approaches.
  • Photopharmacology: Using light to control biological processes at the cellular level. We apply 2-photon light-sheet microscopy to study real-time changes in neuronal circuits and synaptic connections.
  • Fragile X Syndrome: Understanding how phototherapy and brain mapping can help manage neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, paving the way for innovative treatment options.

Our ultimate goal is to manipulate individual synapse activities to gain insights into brain mapping technologies and develop new therapeutic strategies for psychiatric diseases. The research will involve state-of-the-art techniques such as gene manipulation in cell cultures, transgenic animal models, and advanced microscopy tools.

🌟 Why Choose This PhD Program?

  • Join a Leading Research Group: Be part of an energetic and young research team in one of Europe’s leading neuroscience labs. Work closely with experts and collaborate with the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
  • Access to Cutting-Edge Facilities: Benefit from top-notch research infrastructure, including well-equipped laboratories at UIC’s Basic Sciences Department and the technology facilities of Inc-UAB.
  • Engage in High-Impact Research: Your research will not only contribute to a deeper understanding of neuroscience but also have the potential to transform clinical practices and therapeutic interventions for various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
  • Fellowship Opportunities: While the project funding does not cover the salary of the doctoral student, you can apply for internal predoctoral fellowships from UIC or external funding like the Joan Oró FI fellowship, which offer competitive financial support.

🎓 What Are We Looking For?

We are seeking motivated candidates who are excited to learn cutting-edge technologies and have a strong desire to pursue a scientific career in biomedicine. The ideal candidate will have:

  • master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biomedicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, or a related field.
  • A degree grade of 7.0/10 or higher.
  • Experience in molecular and cellular biology, neurobiology, and microscopy (highly valued).
  • A good command of English (essential).

Candidates will need to demonstrate their ability to work with highly specialized techniques and show a passion for the field of neuroscience.
