Are you passionate about cutting-edge biomaterials research and interested in exploring the intersection of chemical and biochemical engineering? The Rodriguez-Rivera Biomaterials Lab at Villanova University is offering a fully funded Ph.D. position starting in the Fall of 2025. This is your chance to join an innovative team, work in a collaborative environment, and contribute to groundbreaking projects that could redefine medical technology!

About the Lab and Research Focus:

The Rodriguez-Rivera Biomaterials Lab is known for its cutting-edge research on biomaterials and their applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The lab’s mission is to design materials that can mimic or enhance biological systems, ultimately contributing to innovative medical treatments.

The successful candidate will have the option to choose between a focus on Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering, depending on their background and interests. As part of this team, you’ll have the unique opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research with far-reaching implications for the biomedical field.

Key Research Projects:

Cardiac Cell Biomaterial Design:

  • This project aims to develop new biomaterials to assess the response of cardiac cells to various charges and environments. The goal is to build in-vitro cardiac models that simulate human tissue structures, allowing researchers to understand heart disease and potential treatment strategies better.

Granular Hydrogel Scaffolds for Muscle Loss:

  • The second major project will focus on developing granular hydrogels that function as scaffolds for muscle loss injuries. These hydrogels will aid in muscle regeneration by providing the necessary support for cells to grow and function effectively.

Both projects require expertise in biomaterials fabrication, cell culture techniques, and in-vitro assays. You will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, including polymeric biomaterials characterizationconfocal microscopymechanical testing, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The outcomes of these projects will not only be presented at international conferences but will also be published in prestigious scientific journals.

Why This Ph.D. is Right for You:

As a Ph.D. candidate at Villanova University, you’ll be part of a forward-thinking lab that emphasizes both collaboration and independent research. You’ll get the chance to:

  • Lead your research projects with full support from the principal investigator and lab team.
  • Work on projects that have the potential to impact real-world medical challenges, particularly in the areas of cardiac health and muscle regeneration.
  • Publish your findings in top-tier scientific journals and present your research at international conferences.
  • Develop skills in advanced biomaterials design and bioengineering, making you highly competitive in both academic and industrial sectors.

Villanova University offers a supportive academic environment that emphasizes mentorship and professional development. You’ll have regular opportunities to present your progress in Rodriguez-Rivera Lab group meetings and 1-on-1 sessions with the principal investigator (PI). Moreover, you’ll be expected to mentor undergraduate students, further enhancing your leadership and teaching skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. in Chemical EngineeringBiomedical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Highly self-motivated with a strong desire to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Interest in mentoring undergraduate students during your Ph.D. journey.
  • English proficiency for international students: a TOEFL score of at least 80 or an IELTS score of 6.5.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in biomaterial preparation, including chemical synthesis and hydrogel fabrication.
  • Hands-on skills in NMR, Rheology, Mechanical Testing, Nanoindentation, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Confocal Microscopy, and Immunofluorescence Staining.
  • Cell culture experience, particularly with human mesenchymal stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing technologies, particularly for biomaterials applications.
  • Strong leadershipinterpersonal, and teamwork skills.
