Fully Funded MSc Scholarship in Climate Change at The University of the South Pacific (USP)
Apply for a fully funded MSc Scholarship in Climate Change at USP Fiji. Join research on blue carbon ecosystems, supported by living allowance, research funds, and more

Are you passionate about climate change and eager to contribute to innovative research that can make a real difference? The University of the South Pacific (USP) offers a unique opportunity for aspiring researchers with its Masters Scholarship in Climate Change. Sponsored by the Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD) and supported by Irish Aid under the Our Shared Ocean Programme, this scholarship provides the chance to work on the “Blue CarBON condition Index and Tools for Fiji (B-CABONI)” project.
This fully funded scholarship is designed to equip two (2) Master’s students with the resources, knowledge, and experience needed to pioneer change within the blue carbon sector. Starting in Semester 1, 2025, successful applicants will conduct research from USP’s Laucala campus in Fiji, focusing on Fiji’s blue carbon pool, which includes critical ecosystems like mangrove forests and seagrass meadows.
Project Description: Blue CarBON Condition Index and Tools for Fiji (B-CABONI)
The B-CABONI project addresses a significant need for assessing the health and sustainability of Fiji’s blue carbon resources. The project’s primary goal is to establish a comprehensive monitoring framework for assessing the condition of key blue carbon ecosystems—such as mangroves and seagrasses—that are vital for both ecological and economic stability in the region.
Through this initiative, USP aims to close gaps in the current knowledge base, especially in areas like true carbon pools and sediment depth assessments. Building on existing research, B-CABONI intends to deliver additional data, maps, and insights into blue carbon quantification. This holistic approach goes beyond isolated ecosystem studies to examine blue carbon reserves collectively, providing foundational evidence for sustainable management and conservation of Fiji’s marine resources.
Thematic Areas of Research
The scholarship will engage researchers in several key areas, including:
- Blue Carbon Quantification: Measure carbon content, storage, and conditions across diverse coastal and marine environments like mangrove forests and seagrass meadows in Fiji.
- Sediment Accumulation Rates: Study the impacts of climate change and human activities on sedimentation rates and how these processes affect carbon retention over time.
- Blue Carbon Geospatial Mapping: Map the extent of mangrove and seagrass ecosystems and assess their spatial attributes to better understand carbon sequestration capacity.
- Ecological Assessment of Blue Carbon Systems: Investigate environmental gradients and other ecological parameters influencing carbon storage across blue carbon systems.
- Risk Identification for Carbon Loss: Identify areas most vulnerable to carbon loss and assess the primary risk factors for degradation within blue carbon pools.
Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides a monthly living allowance to support scholars throughout their research. Additionally, recipients receive funds for research costs, including travel, fieldwork, and equipment, allowing for hands-on learning in Fiji’s unique marine ecosystems.
Scholarship holders are expected to actively participate in PaCE-SD’s research and teaching activities, contributing to the ongoing knowledge base surrounding climate change adaptation and resilience in the Pacific. This aligns with USP’s commitment to sustainable development and emphasizes skill-building for environmental stewardship.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for this prestigious scholarship, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Completion of a relevant postgraduate diploma (or equivalent qualification).
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Passing grade of B or better in PC420 (Research Projects in Climate Change).
Applications are especially encouraged from individuals from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and from students currently enrolled at SIDS third-level institutions, aligning with the goals of the Our Shared Ocean Programme to support those from communities most affected by climate change.
Application Process
Interested candidates should prepare an application package that includes:
- Cover Letter: Addressing the motivation for applying, qualifications, and how the candidate envisions their research contributing to climate resilience in the Pacific.
- Research Intent: Outlining proposed research objectives and alignment with B-CABONI’s goals.
- Academic Transcripts and other relevant documents.
For questions about the scholarship, applicants can reach out to Dr. Hilda Waqa-Sakitivaqa at hilda.sakitivaqa@usp.ac.fj. Completed scholarship applications should be sent to Ms. Harmindar Kaur via email at harmindar.kaur@usp.ac.fj or by post to the Administrative Assistant, PaCE-SD, The University of the South Pacific, Private Mail Bag, Suva, Fiji.
Important Deadline
Applications are due by November 30, 2024. Make sure to submit all required documents by this date to be considered. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
