Postdoc Opportunities in Zooarchaeology at VUB

Are you passionate about archaeological science and eager to contribute to cutting-edge research in Europe? The Brussels Bioarchaeology Lab (BB-LAB) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) offers one PhD and two postdoctoral positions focusing on zooarchaeology, isotope analysis, and bioarchaeological research.

PhD in Zooarchaeology and Isotope Analysis (2 + 2 years)

The PhD project combines zooarchaeology and isotope analyses to investigate animal remains from post-medieval Madeira, aiming to understand the environmental impact of Portuguese settlers on previously uninhabited ecosystems. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international research team under the supervision of Dr. Ben Gruwier and Prof. Christophe Snoeck.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Archaeological Science, Geochemistry, Geology, or Biology (or related field)
  • Strong background in zooarchaeology
  • High motivation, teamwork skills, and excellent communication (B2 English or above)
  • Willingness to travel across Europe for research

Desired:

  • Experience in isotope analyses
  • A valid driving license

Postdoctoral Researchers in Isotope Analysis of Human Remains (2 + 1 years)

Two postdoctoral positions are open for researchers specializing in isotope analyses of C, N, O, S, Sr, and other elements to study human and animal remains from Belgium’s high and late medieval contexts. The first position (PD1) will focus on statistical analysis, while the second (PD2) will involve hands-on experience with advanced isotope analysis equipment, such as MC-ICP-MS.

Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in Archaeological Science, Geochemistry, Geology, or related fields with relevant experience in isotope analysis
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry/geochemistry in archaeological contexts (both burned and unburned remains)
  • High motivation, teamwork, and excellent communication skills (B2 English level or above)

Desired:

  • PD1: Expertise in large datasets, archaeology from High and Late Medieval periods, and willingness to explore historical insights
  • PD2: Proficiency in tuning and repairing MC-ICP-MS and other analytical equipment
  • A valid driving license

Application Process

To apply, submit your complete academic CV, contact information for two referees, and a one-page cover letter describing how you would contribute to the BB-LAB’s research. The application deadline is 8 November 2024. Interviews will take place at the end of November, with the preferred start date being 1 January or 1 February 2025. For more details, contact Prof. Christophe Snoeck at csnoeck@vub.be.

Frequently Asked Questions
Countries like Germany, the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia are known for providing fully funded PhD opportunities. Germany, in particular, offers a high number of fully funded programs with no tuition fees for many courses. Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway) also provide generous funding with minimal to no tuition fees.
The shortest duration for a PhD is typically around 2–3 years in fields that allow for rapid completion, often in the UK. However, completing a PhD in less than 3 years is uncommon and requires intense focus and a highly streamlined research project.
A PhD program can be completed in 2 years, but this is rare. It usually requires a specific research project, an accelerated program, or the student having already completed substantial research. In most cases, PhDs take at least 3 years.
A PhD in Archaeology typically takes 3–5 years to complete, depending on the country, research scope, and whether the student is studying full-time or part-time.
No, not all PhD students are fully funded. Some students pay tuition fees and self-fund their studies. However, many universities in the USA, Canada, and Europe offer fully funded PhD positions, especially in STEM fields and for strong candidates. Funding varies by institution, field, and country.
