Eligibility Criteria for MEXT Scholarships 2023

Candidates must meet each of the conditions listed below to be eligible for the MEXT Scholarship:

  • Required Language: English
  • Eligible Nations: worldwide nations
  • Candidates must be citizens of countries with which Japan maintains diplomatic connections.
  • A candidate who at the time of application was a citizen of Japan is ineligible.
  • For undergraduate students: you need to be at a minimum of 17 years old, under 25, and have finished 12 years of formal education or courses equivalent to a high school (this includes aspired grads)
  • For Masters and Ph.D. students: you must be younger than 35 and a college graduate, including those who are still in school. Alternatively, you are required to have completed 16 or 18 years of school.
  • For students enrolled in a teacher preparation program: you are required to be under 35 years old and a graduate of a university or teacher preparation program. You must have at least five years of current teaching experience in your nation’s primary, intermediate, or teacher preparation institutions.
  • For Japanese Study Students: Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 30. When applicants arrive in Japan, they must be registered as undergraduate students in departments or schools that specialize in Japanese language or culture at a university outside of Japan, and they must be registered in their home institution when they leave for their home countries.

  • Applicants for Bachelors program: Education of 12 years
  • Applicants of Master’s program: degree of Bachelor
  • Applicants of the Ph.D. program: Degree of Master Note: A certified copy of an English translation is necessary if the degree is not written in English.

(3) Attasted transcript of the last degree. (Including the system of grades)

  • Applicants for Bachelors program: Education of 12 Years
  • Applicants of Master’s program: Transcripts of Bachelor’s degree
  • Applicants for the Ph.D. program: Transcripts of Master’s degree
